Santiago, Chile. |
Day 2: Sunday, Dec. 22, 2001
-- Santiago, Chile |
We arrive in the morning and
transfer to our hotel to spend the rest of the day at leisure, with lunch
and dinner on our own. Hyatt
Regency Hotel |
Day 3: Monday, Dec. 23, 2001 --
Santiago — Port Stanley, Falkland Islands |
A morning flight brings us to
Stanley, capital of the Falklands, an island group lying 300 miles east of
Tierra del Fuego. We’ll have time to stroll the streets of this charming
city, with its quaint architecture, friendly villagers and picturesque pubs,
before boarding ‘Explorer’ this afternoon. ‘Explorer’: B•D

Days 4-5: Tuesday &
Wednesday, Dec.
24-25, 2001 -- West Falklands |
The West Falklands are, for the
most part, nature islands, always exciting to visit. Depending on local
conditions, we may land at Steeple Jason or New Island, where we explore a
natural amphitheater filled with bounding rockhopper penguins and
black-browed albatross, in a reserve also known for its population of rare
Johnny Rook, “the most mischievous of all the feathered creation.” A stop at
Saunders Island offers endless possibilities for extended hikes along
unspoiled shorelines that are a birder’s paradise and steeped in history.
Another possibility is nearby Carcass Island, where one of the Falkland’s
foremost sheep farms co-exists with a wildlife sanctuary crowned by a gentoo
penguin colony. Here we’re invited to the island owner’s home to enjoy a
traditional Falkland Islands tea, including a sumptuous array of home-baked
delights. ‘Explorer’: B•L•D |
Days 6-7: Thursday &
Friday,
Dec 26-27, 2001 -- Cruising the South Atlantic |
As we sail southward toward
Antarctica, our lecturers begin their informal series of lectures on the
history of the exploration of Antarctica, and on the continent’s flora,
fauna and birdlife. ‘Explorer’: B•L•D |
Days 8-12: Saturday through
Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2001 - Jan. 1, 2003 -- Antarctica |
As the Antarctic Peninsula and its
offshore islands appear on the horizon, a sense of excitement and
expectation begins to build. A first Zodiac expedition is swiftly followed
by others, each carefully planned by the Captain and Expedition Leader to
take full advantage of each day’s possibilities. On most days we make two
landings, heading out in our swift and versatile Zodiacs, guided by our
expert drivers and accompanied by lecturers, to explore islands filled with
thoUSAnds of penguins, to photograph nesting grounds of seabirds, and to
cruise iceberg-strewn passageways of breathtaking beauty. |
|
As conditions permit, we plan to
land on the Peninsula and on a number of islands, which may include the
South Shetland Islands—including Deception Island, and possibly the rarely
visited east side of the Peninsula. We also hope to sail through
breathtaking Paradise Bay and the Lemaire Channel, with other possibilities
for exploration including a scientific research station, the remains of
early-century whaling and sealing industries, and whale bones on the beach.
After each evening’s leisurely dinner, there’s time to stroll the deck and
gaze at the seascapes in the lingering light of an austral summer twilight.
‘Explorer’: B•L•D |
Days 13-14: Thursday &
Friday, Jan. 2-3, 2003 -- Drake Passage |
As we set sail northward toward
South America, our lecturers recap their presentations on the wildlife,
history and geology of the White Continent. Our time on board is relaxed and
unstructured; there’s time to search for seabirds on deck with our
ornithologist or watch for the occasional whale on the horizon.
‘Explorer’: B•L•D |
Day 15: Friday, Jan 4, 2002 --
Ushuaia, Argentina — Santiago — Miami |
‘Explorer’ docks at Ushuaia,
southernmost city in the world and, after breakfast today, we disembark for
a sightseeing tour of Tierra del Fuego's spectacular wilderness parks.
Later, we transfer to the airport to board a flight to Miami via Santiago.
