Tourism is a growing
industry in Nagasaki. One of the most popular sites is the hillside
Minamiyamate area where many 19th-century Western-style buildings still
stand. Overlooking the harbor, these structures evoke the dramatic days of
the Shogunate and early Meiji Era when Nagasaki expanded greatly through
foreign trade. They are also reminders of the many foreign residents who
settled here and helped to make Nagasaki one of the most vibrant and unique
cities in Japan.
