who are on an RSSC Hotel program or air/sea program. Guests in-transit to
the next cruise will be returned to the ship.
Get acquainted with Buenos Aires during this tour highlighting the city's
major attractions. You will pass the narrow streets of the old section and
the wide boulevards of the modern city, giving you an interesting
perspective on this vibrant city. The Plaza de Mayo is the major hub of the
city and has some of Buenos Aires' most important historic buildings,
including the Cabildo (Colonial Town Hall); the Metropolitan Cathedral, with
the tomb of General San Martin; and Casa Rosada, the presidential palace
that occupies the former site of the colonial fortifications. If the
Cathedral is open, a short visit to the interior will be made. Please note
that shorts and short skirts are not permitted to be worn inside.
From the cosmopolitan center, head toward the charming streets of San Telmo.
This neighborhood is favored by artists and was considered a very
fashionable area in the 19th century. Sadly, epidemics due to the unsanitary
conditions of the time forced residents to move to higher ground. La Boca
can trace its heritage to its Italian immigrants, and it is today perhaps
the city's most colorful area. The color comes from the brightly painted tin
houses with their corrugated roofs. As you walk along the pedestrian street
called Caminito, named after a popular version of the Tango, a stop will be
made to enjoy the quarter and to take photographs. Drive through elegant
Barrio Norte on your way to the Recoleta Cemetery, an amazing above-ground
cemetery lined with mausoleums and statues. A short walk through the
cemetery will bring you to the tomb of Eva Peron - Evita. Following this
short stop, you will pass through Palermo, with its magnificent mansions and
parks before returning to the pier.
Please note: The cathedral may not be open for a visit inside. Shorts and
short skirts are not appropriate wear for a visit to the cathedral. Please
note arrival at the RSSC hotel may be before official check in time of
disembarking guests. |

"The extent of the mourning was unprecedented. The
streets around the ministry were almost impassable for nearly a mile in
every direction on Sunday, when the procession bearing the casket inched
along toward the ministry. Eight people were killed and more than two
thousand injured in the melee. The lines of those seeking to view the casket
stretched at times as far as thirty blocks, the mourners silent and stricken
along cold streets glistening with tearful rain. On the 9th of August, the
coffin was placed on a gun carriage and hauled by thirty-five union members
to Congress, where the honors for a head of state were accorded. The next
day, the gun-carriage resumed its slow pace through dark streets under
lowering skies, past the street lamps shrouded with crepe, while Chopin's
funeral march sounded and 17,000 soldiers held back the pressing multitudes,
delivering the body to the headquarters of the CGT, where facilities had
been readied for permanent embalming." - 'Peron and the Enigmas of
Argentina' p. 246 |
