London's museums and galleries are as varied and rich as you will find
anywhere. Monuments run the gamut from Roman ruins to great baroque churches
representing the architecture of the triumphal British Empire. Many of the
public buildings were constructed in the 18th century and during the reign
of Queen Victoria to reflect the city’s status as the financial and
administrative hub of a great empire.
London today wears its 2,000 years of history with dignity. Alongside
modern skyscrapers are remnants of the city’s Roman wall. Norman London is
evident in William the Conqueror’s White Tower, as well as in the oldest
stones and tombs of Westminster Abbey. A few medieval churches, the city’s
oldest pub, and the timbered Elizabethan façade of Staple Inn recall London
before the Great Fire of 1666. Stately Georgian squares from the 18th
century are preserved in the fashionable West End; the neo-gothic style of
the 19th century is common.
Pier Information. The ship is scheduled to
dock at St. Katharine's Pier on June 17 and July 25. Nearby is the tower
Bridge and the Tower of London. On August 29 the ship is scheduled to
dock at Tilbury. From here the drive is about 1.5 hours to London,
depending on traffic. Taxis are generally available in the pier area. |
Shopping. Some of the most exclusive
shops are found along Oxford, Bond, and Regent Streets. An old favorite
and one of the world’s premier institutions is Harrods. Their famous
Food Halls are truly gastronomic temples. On Sundays many of the more
exclusive shops are closed. Some department stores, such as Selfridges
and Marks & Spencer are open. |
Other Sights. You may want to visit the
British Museum, Westminster Abbey, the National Gallery, or watch the
Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace.
Golf.
Wentworth Golf Course. This is an 18-hole par 72 6739 meter
course. |
