The port city of Safaga is located on
the western flank of the Red Sea, across from the shores of Saudi Arabia.
The dusty streets are for the most part quiet, save for the occasional truck
or bus.
Diving enthusiasts come to Safaga to take advantage of one of the world’s
best locations for underwater exploration. Their number is steadily
increasing and the town’s facilities are gradually improving.
For cruise vessels calling here, Safaga serves as the gateway to Luxor,
which is one of the most important destinations for visitors to Egypt. For
those guests who feel the 150-mile drive through the desert may be too much,
Safaga offers bazaars where bargaining for souvenirs and handicraft items
may be fun. Nearby are a few hotels offering resort and diving facilities.
If you have never seen Egypt’s wonders of antiquity, a trip to Luxor and the
Valley of the Kings should be your priority.
Silversea is pleased to offer to all of its guests the opportunity for a
two-day visit to Luxor and its extraordinary sites during the ship's call at
Safaga.
Pier Information. The ship is scheduled to
dock at Safaga Pier. It is approximately 1.5 miles to central Safaga.
Taxis are generally available at the pier. |
Shopping. Along the main waterfront road are
some small souvenir stalls. You will find a few shops in the beach area
and at resort hotels. Typical souvenirs include Egyptian cotton, papyrus
prints, and gold jewelry, especially the popular cartouche, inscribed
with hieroglyphs. The local currency is the Egyptian pound.
Other Options:
Shams Safaga Resort. For guests not participating in the
overnight Luxor excursion, a visit to this resort may be an alternative.
The resort is six miles from Safaga, with a beautiful beach and water
sports facilities. |
