Often called the ‘Spice Island,’ Grenada has
the prettiest harbor in the Caribbean. St. George’s, the picturesque, small
capital with typical 18th century French provincial houses and fine examples
of English Georgian architecture, is backed by a mountainous interior that
rises from a generally rugged coast that is blessed with some dazzling white
beaches.
Pier Information. The ship may be docked or anchored. The town
is only 5-10 minutes on foot. Taxis are generally unmetered, so agree on
the fare first. |
Shopping. There are many luxury imports on Grenada. Prices are
good for British china and crystal. |
Cuisine. Local dishes include Callaloo, made with crabs
and vegetables, turtle steak, and saltpork, made with coconut milk.
For the best West Indian cuisine try Nutmeg or Rudolf’s, overlooking the
harbor, or for elegant French dining, make reservations at Coconuts. For
open air dining at the beach, eat at the Spice Island Inn. |
Other Sights
St. George’s. The Carenage (inner harbor) has vendors selling
handicrafts, some shops, and restaurants.
Market Square. The busy heart of town, where produce and
handcrafted items are sold on Saturdays.
Granby and Halifax Streets. The main local shopping areas.
Fort George. Situated high above the harbor, it still has cannons
used to fire salutes.
Other Villages: the fishing village of Woburn, where
the movie Island in the Sun was filmed; Woodlands, home to many
sugar plantations; Grenville in the sugar belt, with old sugar
factories and a a nutmeg processing station.
Grand Etang National Park. In the central mountain range, this
forest reserve is home to many rare birds.
Annandale Falls. Set amid luxuriant vegetation, the water plunges
50 feet into a pool of bluish-green water.
Grand Anse. The finest beach on the island.
Outdoor Activities. Fishing, golf, and glass bottom boats.
Art. For local art, browse the Yellow Poui Art Gallery.
Local Transportation and Guides. Check the quality of your
vehicle, its air-conditioning, and the English-speaking ability of your
guide before making a deal. |
