DAY ONE - Lima - Cusco
(Sunday, March 21, 2004)
You will depart
the ship upon arrival at Callao for the Lima airport and board your
afternoon scheduled flight to Cusco. Flight time is 75 minutes.
Cusco
Upon arrival,
transfer to the deluxe Hotel Libertador, located within the historical
center of the city. You will be welcomed with a cup of Coca Tea, which is
supposed to help your system to better adjust to the high altitude. In the
evening, you will enjoy a Cocktail Reception followed by dinner. Overnight
accommodations at the hotel.
Note: Due to Cusco's high altitude (11,000 feet), it may not be
suitable for persons with heart or respiratory problems. At Machu Picchu,
the altitude is only 7,800 feet and usually presents no problem for
visitors. |

DAY TWO - Machu Picchu
(Monday, March 22, 2004)
At 6:00 a.m. you
will depart the hotel for the 45-minute coach transfer to the Poroy train
station. Board the distinctive blue and gold Vistadome for the three-hour
journey to Aguas Calientes. The recently renovated carriages offer
comfortable seating and panoramic windows, which provide enhanced scenic
views and photographic opportunities. During the journey, snacks and hot and
cold refreshments are served. At Aguas Calientes, a minibus will be
available for the 25-minute uphill drive to the ”Lost City of the Inca.”
Machu Picchu
Enjoy a guided
tour of approximately two hours along the ancient pathways, staircases and
terraces, past temples and towers. For centuries, the site was buried in the
jungle until Hiram Bingham discovered the ruins in 1911. Excavations were
carried out by an archaeological team from Yale University. Much of your
walking tour is on uneven ground and involving steps. It concludes with a
buffet lunch at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, an Orient Express
property. After lunch, you will return to the train station. Relax and enjoy
the magnificent scenery during the return journey. At the Poroy station, the
motor coach will await to carry you back to Cusco and the Hotel Libertador.
There will be time to freshen up before dinner is served. Overnight
accommodations at the Libertador.
Note: Touring the Machu Picchu ruins requires extensive walking
and climbing steps. Wheel chair accessibility is only 100 yards from the
entrance into the site. |

lightweight clothing, a raincoat, sun protection, and sturdy walking shoes. |
DAY THREE - Lima - Tuesday,
March 23, 2004
After breakfast
and checkout, enjoy a tour of Cusco's historic center, including the Plaza
de Armas, the Cathedral and the Santo Domingo Monastery, known as the
legendary Koricancha, or “Site of Gold.” Proceed to the town’s outskirts and
visit the remarkable Inca ruins and cult center of Sacsahhuaman. Tour will
end at airport for your flight back to Lima airport. Upon arrival in Lima,
board a waiting coach for an orientation tour of Lima on the return to
Callao the ship. |
