After centuries of Mauri occupation,
Kawau Island was made into a mining site. It was later purchased by St. George
Grey, who transferred it into a paradise of imported trees, plants, and animals
such as the wallabies and kookaburras that remain there today. Currently, the
island is a reserve protecting the natural, cultural and historic heritage of
New Zealand. The larger island of Waiheke is perfect for long walks, excellent
diving and long days on lovely beaches. |
